In this blog, we celebrate National Gardening Week 2022 and look at:

  • Things to consider when buying a lawnmower
  • How to choose the best lawnmower for your garden
  • The different types of lawnmowers available
  • Lawn Maintenance tips

Does Size Matter? Things to Consider When Buying a Lawnmower

Lawnmowers come in all shapes and sizes and choosing the right model can be a daunting task so start by asking yourself a few questions:

  • How big is your lawn?
  • Do you want a lawnmower that collects clippings?
  • Do you want an electric, petrol, or cordless lawn mower?
  • What type of cut do you want?

Choosing the right-sized lawnmower for your lawn is important. A small model might take twice the time in a large garden, whilst a large mower that is too big for your lawn could be awkward to manoeuvre, costly and difficult to maintain.

Small lawns

The Best Lawnmowers for Smaller Lawns

For smaller lawns, think about size, weight and how easy the mower is to move around.  Have you considered a hand-push lawnmower? With no need to worry about adding petrol, charging batteries, or cables, models such as the Webb WEH12R Hand Cylinder Lawnmower are a serious contender for the environmentally conscious gardener maintaining a small lawn, especially where noise might be an issue. Boasting a precision-machined five-blade cylinder and a large rear-roller to create a super neat striped finish, hand push lawnmowers such as this and the WEH30 Side-Wheel Hand Lawnmower is easy to use and require the bare minimum of maintenance and servicing.

If electric lawnmowers sound like an easier option, models such as the Classic 36cm (14”) Electric Rotary Lawnmower are smaller and lightweight.  Harnessing a hefty 1600w of power, this quiet running and easy to manoeuvre mower takes challenging grass conditions in its stride. Featuring a 10-meter power cord and a collapsible handlebar, it’s a great model where storage space is limited.

If you’re after a smaller model with all the features, you might want to consider the lightweight Webb Weer33 Classic, voted ‘Best Buy Budget Mower’ by BBC Gardener’s World Magazine. However, if you want more freedom to move around, the Webb WEV20LM33 Cordless Lawnmower will help make light work of a smaller lawn.

Medium Lawns

The Best Lawnmowers for Medium Lawns

For medium-sized lawns, you’ll need something a bit more powerful, but still easy to manoeuvre. In this case, buying a petrol lawnmower might be a good choice if you want the job done quickly without the restrictions of cables and power sockets. Sturdy and durable, a petrol lawnmower is a great investment if you look after it correctly.

With cutting width being an important consideration – the bigger the cutting width the fewer times you’ll need to go up and down your lawn – the Webb WER40HPSFX Petrol Rotary Lawn Mower and WER410HP Classic Petrol Lawnmower have cutting widths up to 40cm and 41cm respectively.

If pushing a heavy mower is a concern, you might want to look at a self-propelled wheeled petrol Rotary lawnmower such as the Webb WER410SP. Easy to use, just push the lever, and away you go, this effort-saving model boasts a compact 41cm working width and does all the hard work for you. It’s a great choice for medium-sized lawns, particularly ones with slopes and rough areas to negotiate.

And, for those who appreciate the classic striped finish, the WERR17SP Self Propelled Petrol Rear Roller Rotary Lawnmower or the WERR17P Petrol Rear Roller Rotary Lawnmower are a perfect choice! Featuring the ability to mulch, rear-discharge, or collect, these models are ideally placed to handle our typically changeable weather conditions.

If you have a larger lawn or are concerned about the cost or maintenance of a petrol lawnmower, an electric model, such as the Classic WEER36 with 36cm cutting width, or the slightly larger 40cm Electric Rotary WEER40 model could still be in the running. Both models will take challenging grass conditions in a medium-sized garden in their stride and provide a good quality cut.

To keep your lawn green and clean, a good-sized cordless lawn mower such as the WERR17LIP Cordless Rear Roller or the Webb WERR17LISPX2 Cordless Rear Roller Lawnmower offers an affordable and eco-friendly option. Lightweight and easy to handle, both models offer sufficient time to mow a typical medium-sized garden.

Large Lawns

The Best Lawnmowers for Large Lawns

For complete freedom to reach all corners of even the largest garden, buying a petrol lawnmower might be a better choice if you have a larger lawn.

Available in a variety of cutting widths, including larger widths for mowing larger lawns faster, you’ll never have to worry about how far you are away from a plug socket.

While many might think that a large petrol lawnmower is harder to handle, self-propelled models make the job easy, such as the new Webb Supreme WER21HW4 Self Propelled High Wheel Petrol Rotary Lawnmower. Powered by a 163cc Briggs and Stratton EXi Series Engine, this latest addition to the range is a true power horse packed full of premium features, such as a massive 65L grass collection. Durable, lightweight, and easy to handle, its Ready Start® Starting System allows for instant start, with no need to prime or choke before starting up – just pull the cord! With a variety of models available, a self-propelled lawn mower will do most of the hard work for you.

And for those of you who like to sit back and take the driving seat, how about the ultimate Webb Ride On Lawnmower with Collector and Hydrostatic Drive, which comes equipped with a 176 grass collector, which can be set to side discharge, mulch the cuttings back into the grass, or easily emptied, without even having to leave the comfort of your seat.  A ride on mower takes the hard work out of mowing a large lawn but don’t forget, it’s not a totally easy ride, they do require a little bit more TLC than your average mower.

A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by itself but by choosing the right lawnmower for the job, you could be pushing towards that beautiful, lush lawn of your dreams this National Gardening Week.

    • Nathan Dukes says:

Good Morning, Unfortunately, we do not currently have any self propelled corded mowers within our range. We are constantly looking at ways to improve our range of machines, in order to meet customer needs. Should we offer a self propelled corded mower in the future. You will be able to find it within our Webb store. Kind Regards Webb Garden Power
